| Basic Beekeeping |

Take a class while you begin keeping bees! Enter the exciting world of the honeybee. Learn how to manage up to 10 colonies, and to produce 1,000 pounds of honey each year. It is entirely possible to recover your equipment costs in the first year of beekeeping.
The course outline includes introductory information about bee biology, nutrition, and bee behaviour. You will learn how to manage bees for profit or for enjoyment. Whether you are a novice beekeeper, a gardener, or naturalist, this course is for you. Certificates are awarded for those who pass written and practical exams.
Graduates of our Basic Beekeeping course are provided with three FREE seminars each year. These seminars are specifically designed to keep you up-to-date on current practices. The seminars are Revive the Hive (early spring), Bee Disease Free (summer), and No Freeze Bees (late summer).
Tuition includes classroom, laboratory, field experience, handouts, and your textbook, "Beekeeping in Western Canada". Bee suit is required for field days.
Courses are conducted in 3 day sessions, Friday thru Sunday. |
| Revive the Hive |

Bring bees out of winter safely. During this first beekeeping seminar of the year, you will be shown how to safely check a colony in the early spring for population strength, general health, and nutrition. You will also learn the current methods of disease and pest control. For novice and experience beekeepers. Bring your bee suit. |
| Bee Disease Free |

Disease and pest identification & control. During this valuable seminar, you will get up close and personal with the Varroa mite, American Foulbrood, Chalkbrood, and much more. You will be shown how to diagnose and treat an unhealthy colony. This seminar should be mandated by law and enforced by the army. Bring your bee suit. |
| No Freeze Bees |

Preparing your colony for winter. Now that you are rich and famous with your bees, you can use this seminar to learn how to care for them just before winter. Disease and pest identification and treatment will be covered as well as feed and nutrition. For all beekeepers. Bring your bee suit - the girls will be crabby. |

Pamper yourself and learn the benefits of natural skin care products. Learn the history of Burt's and the benefits of natural products for your skin. Receive a hand massage and learn how to care for your skin. A Burt's Bees representative and our knowledgeable staff will be available to answer all your questions. | Pure Beeswax Candles - Poured & Dipped |

In this fast-paced hands-on seminar, you will learn about the history of candle making, the types of candles and wicks available, why some candles drip and others smoke, and the benefits of burning pure beeswax versus paraffin. Participants will make and take home a combination of hand dipped, tea-light, votive , and moulded candles. A total of 400 grams of pure beeswax is included (a value of $25 in candles) with additional wax available at discount prices. Several high-quality German rubber moulds are available for making moulded candles. Handouts, materials and equipment provided.
NOTE: Children must be at least 12 years of age as participants to work with HOT wax. |
| Pure Beeswax Candles - Private Workshop |

Bring a group of 8-12 people and use our candle making facilities and expert instructor to make whatever pure beeswax candles you can in the 2 ½ hour workshop. Price includes 500 grams of pure beeswax. Extra beeswax may be purchased at discount prices. 500 grams can make two large moulded candles, or over 8 votives, or more than 25 tea lights. Moulds, tea light bases, and wicking are supplied at no extra cost. Second person and child discounts do not apply. Dates and times by appointment. Evenings and weekends are available. (Having the Poured & Dipped course would be an asset).
NOTE: Children must be at least 12 years of age as participants to work with HOT wax. |
