FAQs . . . for School Field Trips
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is there a certain age range for the students?
Student ages can range from pre-school to university. The presentation is tailored for the age and experience level of the group. It is recommended that the age range and experience of a specific group be narrow so that each member of the group can get the most out of the presentation.

Q. What will the students learn?
Students will discover the mysterious and incredible world of the honeybee. They will learn about bee biology and life cycle, bee products such as honey and royal jelly, and the art of beekeeping. The importance of honeybees to our environment, our health, and to agriculture is discussed. We tailor our tours to the teacher's specific requirements. Anything is possible!
With our new Bug Lab, students will also learn all about the life of an arthopod as they meet several different live insects . . . and maybe even hold one!

Q. Is the presentation interactive? What activities do the students participate in?

Absolutely yes! Your students can:

  • Bee a pollinator
  • Spin a real extractor
  • Handle beekeeping equipment and tools
  • Touch and smell propolis, beeswax, and pollen
  • Find the Queen Bee with her ladies in waiting in our observation hive, and see bees dancing and eggs hatching!
  • Sample the honeybees' sweet and sticky products of the hive
  • Meet a variety of arthopods -- and even have the chance to hold one!
  • Each tour includes one or two hands-on workshops and/or a craft

Q. How much does it cost for students? For teachers and chaperones?

The cost is $8.00 per student (incl. GST) with a minimum charge for 20 students. Teachers and parent guardians attend free.

Q. How long is the tour?

Field trips for K-12 are 2 hours and pre-school field trips are 1 hour. Our On The Road tours are approximatley 1.5 hours.

Q. Where is Honeybee Centre and how do I get there?

Honeybee Centre is centrally located at the corner of Fraser Highway and 176 Street (Pacific Highway) in Surrey, B.C. Follow the link for a map and directions.

Q. Is there somewhere for the students to eat lunch?

We have an outdoor grass picnic area with a limited number of picnic tables that is available for school groups free of charge.

If an indoor area is desired, the tour room(s) can be booked for 30 minutes at a charge of $1.00 per student.

Snacks and refreshments can be purchased at our snack bar. Please let us know when you book your tour that you will be eating your lunch here so that we can make arrangements.

Q. Are tours available year 'round?

Yes, but lease keep in mind that beekeeping demos are weather-dependant!

Q. What are the times available to schedule a field trip?

Field Trips may be scheduled year round from 9:30am to the last tour beginning at 3:00pm.

Q. What are some of the bugs we'll see on our trip?

Besides honeybees, you will see and learn about a variety of bugs including scorpions, tarantulas and stick bugs.

Q. What size of field trip groups can you accomodate?

Field trips of up to 60 students can be accommodated. Larger groups are split into two groups, each with their own tour facilitator. Teachers should pre-arrange the groups prior to the start of the tour.

Please note that some rooms on our tour can only hold 40 visitors; additional parent helpers may be asked to sit out of certain portions of the presentation if necessary.
