Date: Saturday June 10 and 17 10 am – 2 pm

Location: Theory at Honeybee Centre, Practise in one of our nearby bee yards

Price: $99 +GST includes grafting tool, and handouts

This course mixes theory and practice to give you the skills you need to raise your own queens! In the classroom we will discuss the reproductive biology of honeybees, schedule of queen rearing, and queen rearing systems for production of a few – a few thousand queens. In the field we will evaluate breeder colonies, set-up cell raisers using a queenless starter-finisher system, raise queen cells using graft and no-graft systems, and how to evaluate, mark, and cage queens. Students will be able to take home up to 30 ripe queen cells from their own grafting (depending on success)! Cells will be available for pick-up June 21.

Students must bring their own bee-suit, and hive tool. Some method of magnification (e.g. reading-glasses) is recommended for grafting.
